Dear Brianna,
'Diet' doesn't always mean food or calorie reduction, although it sometimes does. It is a word that describes the overall food intake of a person. For people who are overweight calorie reduction could be good, but in general that is not a good idea for infants. However infants especially need diets which are rich in essential nutrients and not too rich in sugars for example.
Babies need to have a healthy balanced diet, adapted to their age and needs. Babies would usually not engage in food reduction – unless you get a medical advice to do so. You are quite correct that a weight reducing diet for a baby could result in degradation of a hungry developing body. Advice on the best way to feed your baby should come from your pediatrician.
